Frequently Asked Questions

How old should my puppy be before getting spayed?

The ideal time to spay a small to medium-sized dog is typically between 6 and 12 months of age, often before their first heat cycle, to prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of mammary tumors. While 6-8 months is a common recommendation for smaller breeds, medium breeds can be spayed up to 12 months of age. It is always best to consult with your veterinarian to determine the optimal timing for your specific dog, as they can consider breed-specific health factors.

Spaying large breed dogs is best done after their first heat cycle, typically between 1 and 2 years old, to support proper bone and joint development and reduce the risks of orthopedic issues and obesity. Although spaying before the first heat can help prevent certain cancers, waiting until after the growth plates close naturally is often the better option. The exact timing should be a personalized decision made with your veterinarian, taking into account your dog's specific health, breed, and lifestyle.

Can Dogs Eat Raisins, or Are They Dangerous?

Raisins can cause kidney failure in your pet, and candies may contain toxic substances like chocolate or xylitol, a common sugar substitute used in sugar-free candies and gum. Therefore, it is best to keep raisins, grapes, and other candies away from your pet. If you know or suspect that your pet has ingested something harmful, it is best to call the Pet Poison Control hotline (888) 426-4435 or take your pet to a veterinarian or the nearest emergency room.
